New Series Gold Dalek

I have been a Dr Who fan since it started in 1963 when I was nine. Wouldn't it be nice to time travel, just think of the wrongs in the world today that you could right, all the mysteries that could be explained....
Animation by Laurara

My fascination for Daleks started when I was aged nine in 1963.

It was the irrational fear of the first ever non human shaped alien on a black and white television in the corner of the lounge that I have never forgotten. Up till then we had only ever seen men in suits. We had literally never seen anything like it before and they were terrifying.

...and yes I did hide behind the sofa!

This is a treasured picture of me in August 1965 with "full" size Dalek that my late father built. Wearing the Dalek "suit" I walked over half a mile to the local village Fete but sadly didn't win the fancy dress competition. However that water pistol gave a great deal of satisfaction..... The Doctors: William Hartnell WAS Doctor Who and I never really took to Patrick Troughton for the reason that he wasn't Hartnell. However I still watched the programme and never missed a Dalek episode. Then Jon Pertwee came along and as I was sitting exams and leaving school for college I never really watched much.

Added to that the time and space traveller seemed to spend all his time in present day England, how boring was that!

By the time Tom Baker came along I was into girls and then got married. He seems to be the most popular Doctor and with each regeneration the program and production was getting better. Peter Davidson was a very popular young actor and brought a modern light hearted feel to the program. Colin Baker seemed to be more serious and then it was axed.

Sylvester McCoy looked as though he really enjoy the role of the Doctor. The Imperial Daleks that he faced in "Remembrance of the Daleks" (pictured left) were in my mind the best built (until the New Series that is). They really did look like they had come off a production line, as per previous story lines. Ray Cusack said he thought they were horrible and looked too plastic.

Paul McGann's Doctor was very classy and I think he should have been allowed to carry on as the Doctor in the new 2005 series. Christopher Eccleston (Quits-topher Eccle-stun) did a great job bringing the Doctor back to our screens but for me he struggled with the humour side of the character. Billie Piper on the other hand was "Fantastic". It's hard to imagine a better modern day Doctor than David Tennant. He is flamboyant, definately has the humour and can also act out the more serious side of the Doctor.

The first movie was in 1965 and was a shock in many ways. The Doctor suddenly went from a small black and white TV screen onto the BIG screen in COLOUR ! The Daleks were bigger than before and they were also now in full colour.

It was also a shock to see the TARDIS looking like a mad professor's laboratory. For some reason seeing Peter Cushing as the Doctor never seemed to worry me.

The first Doctor Who Movie

After the 1999 TV Movie I became divorced and better off financially so I was able to buy DEREK, my second full size Dalek pictured right. Since then I have collected all sorts of Doctor Who memorabilia, a lot of which came from EBay

Ray Cusack

My first and only convention was at Liverpool's Day of the Daleks (Nov 2000). Here I was delighted to meet famed Dalek designer Ray Cusack pictured above.

I joined Whoovers the Derby based fan club in 2003 after meeting Steve Hatcher who helped with the 40th Exhibition (pictured above right) at the CVR's Kingsley and Froghall Railway Station. In 2005 I motorised Derek and he made many charity appearances. He has even made a guest appearance on BBC !'s Children in Need, Fantastic!

Being a member of Whoovers means you get to meet some great guests. The picture right is of Robert Shearman the script writer of the "Dalek" episode in series one.

I could have listened to him talking about DR Who and Dalek for hours! His insight into script writing and the making of the new series was fascinating, it was almost like it was yesterday and we were there!

I don't think I have known any Whoovers meeting go so quickly.

Another excellent meeting was with "Ace" alias Sophie Aldred, click here for pictures
